No single client had all of them; most have from 15-20, and different clients have a different combination.<\/p>\n<p>Rewards<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Eating to reward myself when I feel no one else or nothing else will.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating to feel good, comforted, happy, secure, centered, at home.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating to give myself pleasure.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating to experience being in control, to experience that no one can<br \/>\nstop me.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating to celebrate.<\/p>\n<p>Triggers<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Eating when I\u2019m nervous.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I\u2019m bored.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I\u2019m lonely.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I want to take a break from work, as a diversion.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I want to avoid doing something I don\u2019t want to do.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I think there won\u2019t be enough food . (This is a response<br \/>\nto childhood deprivation. If there wasn\u2019t enough food to eat\u2014if you<br \/>\ndidn\u2019t eat the food right away it would be gone and you wouldn\u2019t be<br \/>\nable to eat at all\u2014you can get conditioned to eat whenever you see<br \/>\nfood whether you are hungry or not.)<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I\u2019m in social situations where everyone else is eating.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when I feel deprived of food.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when tired (to get energy).<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when nauseas (to stop it).<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when not doing anything specific (not necessarily bored).<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling sorry for myself.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling unloved.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when emotionally charged.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when depressed.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when experiencing intense hurtful emotions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when stressed.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling guilty.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling unlovable.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when anxious, angry, upset, sad, etc.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling needy.<br \/>\n\u2022 Eating when feeling rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my clients have suggested to me that they are driven to eat just<br \/>\nbecause food is in front of them, just before they \u201cstart\u201d a diet, when they<br \/>\nthink they can eat without gaining weight, or that they just can\u2019t stop eating<br \/>\nonce they start. These are not examples of eating triggers. They are just<br \/>\nsymptoms of other triggers and rewards.<\/p>\n<p>You eat in these four situations because at least one or more of the<br \/>\nother triggers and rewards are almost always present, so if there is food in<br \/>\nfront of you or you\u2019ve already started eating, the other triggers or rewards<br \/>\nhave you continue to eat even if you aren\u2019t hungry. But when all the real<br \/>\ntriggers and rewards have been de-conditioned, you will no longer eat in<br \/>\nthese situations.<\/p>\n<p>From my experience with my clients, I am convinced that most<br \/>\nemotional eating is the result of eating that has been conditioned to occur whenever there is a specific trigger or the desire for a reward present.  Also from my experience, when you de-condition eating you\u2019ll stop overeating \u2026 for good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emotional eating is caused by triggers and rewards.
